Hsinchu, Taiwan-Aug. 6, 2009-The world’s leading SoC Design Foundry service provider, Global Unichip Corp. (GUC; TW: 3443), held the Q2 2009 Investor Conference in Taipei today. Vice Chairman and CEO, K.C. Shih and president and COO, Jim Lai shared their views on the outlook of GUC and the industry.

The total revenue for Q2, 2009 was 2.035B NTD, an increase of 8% from Q1, 2009 (1.883B NTD), and a decrease of 11% from Q2 of 2008 (2.285B NTD). The combined revenue for the first half of 2009 was 3.918B NTD, operating income was 205M NTD, net income was 212M NTD, and was EPS 1.69 NTD (EPS 1.96 NTD before employee profit sharing expense).

GUC has been focusing on service in advanced technology. Several 40nm customer design projects started in Q1, 2009. Total revenue from nanometer projects grew rapidly to 30%. Further breakdown of the revenue showed that 81% of NRE revenue came from nanometer projects. 90nm projects represented 23% of the total NRE revenue, 65nm projects grew sharply to 55%, and 40nm projects represented 3%. 0.13um projects were the major contributor to turnkey revenue, the contribution represented 62% of total turnkey revenue of 1H, 2009. 65nm project turnkey revenue started to kick-in and represented 8% of the turnkey revenue of 1H, 2009.

Communication applications accounted for 60% of the 1H, 2009 total revenue, while consumer electronics accounted for 35%. The major product applications include networking, GPS, mobile TV, video recorder, surveillance systems, and WiMax. North America and Japan serve as the main customer base, generated 67% and 17% of revenue, respectively. Taiwan, Europe and Korea represent 4%, 4% and 2%, respectively, of the revenue. Although China market only accounted for 6% of the revenue, the growth momentum of this market was extra ordinary. GUC anticipates that the Taiwanese government can further loosen the regulations of IC design company operations in China in the near future. GUC will be able to participate the competition in China market on a fair ground.

Although GUC has been impacted by the global financial tsunami,  GUC is still focusing on cultivating the advanced technologies. In June, GUC was awarded the 26th place of the “Taiwan Technology Top 100” by BNext Magazine. In addition, GUC announced the application and validation of System-in-Package (SiP) design solution in TSMC Reference Flow 10.0 that shows their capability on component design. With the recovering global economic, the revenue growth of GUC will keep increasing at a moderate pace for the next half of the year.
